Nicholas E. Chimicles Named to the Board of Directors of the Shriver Center
On February 22, 2007, Nicholas E. Chimicles, a senior partner in the firm, was named to the Board of Directors of the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law ("Shriver Center") based in Chicago, Illinois. He will serve for a three year term.
The Shriver Center, www.povertylaw.Org, a national resource, champions law and policy promoting equal opportunity and support for low-income individuals, families, and communities so that they can escape poverty permanently. It is a national leader in leveraging creative, fiscally sound strategies that maximize state and local implementation of federal antipoverty policies.
The Shriver Center's advocacy agenda focuses on welfare and work supports, community investment, housing, and women's law and policy. The Shriver Center's advocacy is spearheaded by a team of highly skilled, nationally recognized attorneys. Its attorneys provide highly valued frontline information and ideas to policymakers and other national advocates, while collaborating with and supporting attorneys and others working at the state and local levels.
The Shriver Center's advocacy model is unique in that it extends from the Beltway to state capitals and into communities. Using extraordinary communication and information dissemination services, the Shriver Center constantly monitors the field in pursuit of even better antipoverty policies and programs.
Sargent Shriver founded the Shriver Center (then the National Clearinghouse for Legal Services) in 1967. As the architect of a nationally coordinated system for delivering legal services to low-income people, Mr. Shriver focused on the use of information and communication to add value to the very limited resources allocated for the legal representation of people in poverty and to ensure the opportunity for low-income clients to participate in our justice system.
